In 1984, Philippine Expressions Bookshop was established in Los Angeles as a mail-order bookshop dedicated to Filipino Americans in search of their roots. In 1989, we opened a brick and mortar bookshop in the old Jewish Quarter on Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, between Robertson and La Cienega. As a specialty bookshop, we promoted only materials relevant to the Philippines and Filipino Americans.
However, in 1992, the bookshop's roof was damaged during a major storm in LA. Thus, the bookshop closed its doors, but continued its operation via mail-order in Hilgard Avenue, Westwood, in the vicinity of UCLA. In 1996, the business moved to Rancho Palos Verdes. And finally, in July 2016, we reopened as a brick and mortar bookshop in the Arcade Building which is located in the Historic Arts District, San Pedro, CA. BTW, in 2017, the bookshop opened its affiliate: Pinta*Dos Philippine Art Gallery, right next door.
The Bookshop has provided a home for Philippine writings in America and has pioneered in promoting Philippine books in the US since 1984. It celebrated its 36th year of service to the Filipino American community all over the US in 2020. We host regular publication parties, book talks, lectures on Philippine culture by visiting Filipino scholars, poetry readings during the National Poetry Month in April, and other literary soirees through out the year. Annually, we celebrate Pinay Gathering to honor Filipino and Filipino American women authors during the International and National Women's History Month in March. Likewise, we also mark the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May with a program for young children. And lastly, we celebrate the Filipino American History Month in October.
The Bookshop has placed Filipino and Filipino American authors in the literary map of Los Angeles. For seventeen years, we participated in the LA Times Festival of Books (LATFB), at the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and then, when the venue was changed, at the University of Southern California (USC). Over the years, the Bookshop has supported various community events among which are the LA Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) and the biennial conference of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS). We also participated in the Filipino American Book Festival at the San Francisco Public Library in October 2011 and 2013.
And now, our new bookshop in San Pedro is ready to serve you. Please come and visit, and experience the Philippines in San Pedro, the Port City of Los Angeles. The bookshop is full of cultural artifacts of the country. After all, we not only sell books but we also sell Culture! Mabuhay!

General Disclosures:
Unlike in the US, the market for books in the Philippines is not well-developed yet. Thus, the print run of books that are published in the country tend to be small. The cost of production is high because the print run is low; new technology, paper, ink and other components of publishing have to be imported; a reasonable fee is given for research and the cost of labor has also increased. All these factors are reflected in the selling price for Philippine books within the country. As you are aware, most of our books are imported from the Philippines and the cost of freight, warehousing and labor are added to the landed cost of the book. Thus, Philippine books in the US tend to be expensive. We have been importing books from the Philippines for 36 years now, and we have experienced the increasing price of our imports.
I suggest that you visit our online bookshop regularly and buy a title when it is newly released. This way, the cost is a little less. Once the book goes Out of Print (Marked as Out of Print), we acquire OP titles from a secondary market which means that the acquisition cost is much higher. We sell a lot of out-of-print titles marked as OP. Even if they are OPs, the books are in good condition and are not Used books. Most of the books in our website are in softcover or are paperbound. Some may not look pristine because aging tends to discolor the paper. Plus, paperbound books do not travel well. Titles that are marked out of print (OP) are subject to prior sale. If the title that you want has been presold, we offer a Free Search Service for out of print titles. If interested, email: LNL.philippinebookshop@yahoo.com. However, we can not guarantee how long it would take for our Book Scouts in the Philippines to locate the title that you are interested in. Once a title is found, we will advise you accordingly.
